Herniated Schmorl

Hernias of Schmorl called the breakthrough of cartilaginous tissue from the intervertebral disc into the vertebral body. Hernia Schmorl does not squeeze the spinal cord or spinal cord, its presence only indicates that in this section of the spine under certain conditions, a herniated disc may appear.

In other words, unlike the usual hernia that falls into the lumen of the spinal canal, the Schmorl hernia is just an "x-ray" symptom: there is no direct compression of the nerve spinal roots, since the intervertebral disc protrudes into the body below or above the vertebra. That is, the hernia of Schmorl speaks only of the discomfort of the intervertebral disc itself.

The causes of the hernia Schmorl

The reasons can be grouped into the following groups: metabolic disorders, hereditary factors, postural disorders, trauma and other factors.

The hernia of Schmorl is one of the signs of Sheyerman-Mau's diseases, in addition, she appears and with a strong stoop. Hernia is sometimes congenital, but it can also be acquired. In the elderly, such a hernia appears due to severe osteoporosis, that is, due to the age-related decrease in strength and density of bone tissue. In young people, it can be the result of a strong impact or fall, as well as lifting heavy weights and some other diseases.

In fact, the hernia of Shmorl is akin to the micro-fracture of the bone tissue of the vertebra, which occurs in people with weak, fragile vertebral bones.

Why does such a low strength of vertebrae occur?

Strength and density of the vertebrae depends on the activity of the blood supply, that is, if the blood flow is small, the strength of the vertebrae rapidly decreases. Why can there be a decrease in blood flow to the spine? It depends on the work of the muscles, or rather - on their strength and activity. Muscles of the back - this is a kind of pump for pumping blood to the vertebrae. And if a person moves a little, does not lead an active lifestyle, vertebrae lose their mass and quickly become weaker. On the contrary, if a person constantly strengthens the muscles of the back, he, in this way, pumps the blood, which more actively enters the vertebral tissue. All this has the most direct relation to the hernia of Schmorl, since, for example, with stoop, the blood flow of the middle muscles of the back sharply decreases. That as a result weakens the flow of blood to the vertebrae in this zone. As a result, the vertebrae are easily punctured by the intervertebral discs, which leads to the appearance of Schmorl's hernia, single or multiple.

Signs of Schmorl's hernia

The hernia practically does not make itself felt, as the bone tissue of the vertebra suffers, which usually does not hurt. Sometimes the appearance of a hernia is accompanied by a feeling of fatigue in the back. The pain appears only at very large sizes of a hernia, especially with long walking or long standing on the legs.

Treatment of Schmorl's hernia

Treatment consists in treatment and elimination of the underlying disease. For example, if the cause of a hernia in a trauma, you need to strengthen the skeleton with medical products and preparations with vitamin D. Children are prescribed fish oil.

It should be remembered that the use of drugs that strengthen bone tissue, preventing the destruction of bones, negatively affects the kidneys and ligaments - calcium stones in the kidneys and calcification of ligaments may occur. Therefore, the best treatment and means of prevention was and is daily gymnastics, aimed at pumping blood and strengthening the muscles of the back.
