Echography or ultrasound is the most safe, effective and common method for assessing the development of pregnancy.
Transvaginal ultrasound allows to determine in the uterus cavity a fetal egg within twenty days after conception, and after a week and its contents.
The four-week-old embryo does not exceed five millimeters in length, while the heart of the fetus does up to a hundred beats per minute.
The head and trunk are clearly discernible already by the sixth-seventh week from the moment of conception, here one can even consider its limbs and the first attempts at movement.
Is it harmful for a pregnant woman?
When pregnancy, as everyone knows, any incomprehensible effects on the body should be avoided. Whether the ultrasound study was included in their number was determined back in 1978. The echography was then only introduced for use during pregnancy, and massive tests have already been carried out, which make it possible to conclude that this method of research is absolutely safe for living tissues.
Even a significant excess of the ultrasound intensity necessary for performing the diagnosis does not have any negative effect on mammalian embryos.
When do the first ultrasound in pregnancy?
In this case, you should always remember the importance of ultrasound in the first trimester. Each year, thousands of children with significant defects are born, which can be identified already at an early date. This applies, for example, to babies born to children with Down syndrome. With the use of ultrasound, it is possible to suspect the development of this defect as early as the twelfth week. This is one of the reasons why the first ultrasound of the fetus should not be carried out later than this period.
This is optimal for markers of chromosomal pathology and diagnosis of gross malformations of the fetus. It is important not to forget that in just two weeks the features of ultrasound reflection, which make it possible to suspect Down's syndrome and a number of other severe pathologies, can disappear completely without a trace.
In addition, if there is a suspicion of chromosomal pathology, doctors will have a small but sufficient time for the implementation of a special genetic study. If the results of it are unfavorable, there is still time to interrupt pregnancy.
In the first trimester, it is possible to establish, with an accuracy of up to two days, the gestational age of the fetus, which will later be used by obstetricians as a reference point for various situations of doubt.
Terms of ultrasound for pregnant women
Ultrasound should be administered to all pregnant women, and specific deadlines are defined for this. Usually it should be done on the twelfth, twenty-second and thirty-second week. Such a schedule makes it possible to determine the widest possible range of possible pathologies and complications of the fetus, which makes it possible to choose the optimal medical tactics.
