What is hemoglobin?
One of the components of human blood is red blood cells called erythrocytes. They perform an important function - carry oxygen to all cells of the body. And so in erythrocytes there is a protein - hemoglobin, which contains iron ions. It is iron, when combined with oxygen, gives the blood a red color. Thanks to hemoglobin, oxygen enters all parts of the body along with the bloodstream. Following in the opposite direction, hemoglobin takes carbon dioxide from our cells and then carries it through the veins into the lungs.
Normal is the level of hemoglobin, equal in men 130-170 in women 120-150 g /l. If the level of hemoglobin is below normal, the body begins to suffer from a lack of oxygen. At a critical mark, a pathological condition occurs, called iron deficiency anemia, or anemia.
Signs of iron deficiency anemia
Usually a person whose low hemoglobin experiences weakness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, develops heart murmurs, pale skin, shortness of breath, hands and feet constantly cold. Sometimes there are fainting. Cracks appear in the corners of the mouth, muscle weakness develops. Sometimes a person begins to experience a predilection for strange smells, which seem to others unpleasant. Hair and nails deteriorate.
Causes of lowering hemoglobin
causes may be frequent bleeding phenomena (eg, uterine), hormonal changes, persistent stress, inappropriate nutrition (diet for weight loss also play a role). One should keep in mind that products that are rich in calcium reduce the absorption of iron, so for a while you will have to refuse not only tea and coffee, but also from dairy products, or there are these products at different times. And more: cereals bind iron in the intestines, which prevents its assimilation, so meat should be eaten without bread, without pasta and cereals, and garnish is better to eat vegetables.
